Taliban closes girls’ high school again

Taliban forces suddenly withdrew the decision to open girls’ high schools in Afghanistan, and announced that, until there is a plan suitable for islamic law then all girls’ high schools will remain closed.

Last week, the Taliban’s Education Ministry announced that it would allow the opening of all-girls high schools in Afghanistan from March 23, after months of restricting the education of high school girls. Many teachers and girls were eager to return to school, but the sudden decision to be revoked just hours after schools were allowed to reopen has shocked many.

During their rule in Afghanistan, from 1996-2001, the Taliban restricted education and employment for women. When it returned to power last August, it continued to impose a series of restrictions on women.

Student Khadija in Kabul, Afghanistan shared: “When the teacher in charge arrived, we saw her crying, she was speechless. We both did not understand why she was crying on such a happy day. Then, Ms. Tell us to go home because high school girls aren’t allowed to go back to school yet.”

Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said: “We share the deep disappointment of Afghan high school girls who, after six months of waiting, still have not been able to return. back to school”.

The lack of access for girls to education exposes them to more violence, poverty and exploitation. This is an issue that needs special attention at a time when Afghanistan has to overcome many crises.
