Shanghai (China) officially implemented a blockade in 2 phases starting today (March 28), to prevent the number of Covid-19 cases from increasing sharply in the city.

According to Reuters news agency, the blockade measures, announced by the Shanghai government on March 27, will last for nine days and be divided into two phases based on two areas, using the Huangpu River as a landmark to move forward. testing the entire population.

Counties to the east and some west of the river, with about 11 million people, will be locked down from March 28 to April 1. The remaining counties, with about 14 million people, will be locked down from April 1 to 5.

Public transport, including ride-hailing services, will be suspended in these areas. Vehicles are not allowed on the road without permission. All companies and factories must stop production or work remotely, except for those that provide public services or food.

Traffic control will be implemented on highways in and out of the city. Anyone wishing to leave Shanghai must present a negative coronavirus test result taken within 48 hours prior to departure.

“People should understand, support and cooperate with the city’s epidemic prevention and control,” the Shanghai government statement said, according to Reuters.

According to China’s National Health Commission (NHC), Shanghai recorded 2,678 new Covid-19 cases on March 27, making the city the second hottest outbreak in China, after Jilin. Observers said that Shanghai could be a test for China’s “no Covid” strategy.
