Trainee was promoted to COO after 6 months by writing an email to his boss

How long does it usually take for an intern to be promoted to a director of a company? It may be years, but that’s not the case with Raven Beria. In 2016, Beria (then 24 years old), was an intern at Inpac Wealth Solutions, an asset management company in Hawaii (USA).

At that time, his job was organizing events and concierge services. However, his superiors only recognized him for the work he was doing, not what he was capable of doing.

Aware of that and confident in her own abilities, Beria took a different approach than other trainees in the same position to get promoted. Instead of thinking like an intern or even an employee, Beria thought like a consultant: “How can I become a necessary partner for my superiors instead of just a person? tasked to complete?”.

After consulting a book, he drafted a proposal on how he would help the company develop an executive summary and sent it to the head of the company.

As a result, that email completely changed Beria’s career. After reading it, his superiors asked to meet with him to discuss the future of the company and how he would realize those ideas.

Finally, thanks to his efforts, Beria was promoted from intern to director and 6 months later, he was appointed to the position of COO (chief operating officer) of the company. “Instead of seeing myself as an employee or chief operating officer, I now see the company as if it were my client and I was a consultant,” he shared.

After Beria’s story was published in some newspapers, many people were very curious about the “divine” email he sent to his superiors.

Below is the content of the email to help Beria “change her life”:

“Dear Troy,

He has a broad vision for the growth of Inpac. The question is how are we going to make it happen?

In this letter, I want to:

Clarify your vision

List some obstacles we need to overcome

Provide a blueprint and to-do list to get us where he wants to go

I want to be like a partner working in your best interest to help realize your vision. This means (I will do) less task-oriented work and more project-focused work related to business development and resources. I consider this to be my strong point and Inpac is where I feel happiest working.

Most importantly, you can hire people to do things like event planning or marketing, but it’s hard to hire people to devote the time and effort to the overall strategic direction of Inpac’s future.

Sometime later, I want to report to you in another way. Since these are high-level projects, we will collaborate using a single set of profiles.

At the end of every Friday, I will provide a one-page executive summary of what I myself have done and what I need from you to realize your vision. You can look at it over the weekend and we can discuss it in strategy meetings early next week.

My brief involves 4 major projects on:

Practice Management

Customer experience

Talent management

Human Resources

In these ways, we can work together to make Inpac grow even more.”

Here are the reasons why Beria’s email is appreciated by superiors:

Do not rush to ask for benefits from your boss, but show what you can contribute

Beria did not focus on what he wanted, but on what his superiors needed. Instead of asking for a promotion or new position right away, he mentioned his boss’s vision and how he could help fulfill it.

Be specific, not just talk

Instead of simply describing it, Beria demonstrated his ability by attaching a concrete plan as tangible proof of what he could accomplish in the future. As a result, his superiors felt more comfortable transferring him to his new role.
