Experts warn NASA’s project can entice aliens to invade Earth

Scientists at the University of Oxford (UK) have warned about NASA’s plan to send position data and other information into space. According to experts, the attempt could have unintended consequences, including sparking an alien invasion.

According to RT, the project that British scientists refer to is “Beacon in the Galaxy” (BITG) – a data broadcast program initiated by experts from the US Space Agency (NASA) with the aim of purpose “welcome extraterrestrial intelligence”.

In this project, the US space agency wants to transmit signals from the Allen telescope (SETI Institute, California) and China’s 500m aperture spherical radio telescope (FAST). The information broadcast included the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the position of the Solar System in the Milky Way, digitized images of people, and calls for extraterrestrials to respond.

Anders Sandberg, a senior research fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) at the University of Oxford, argues that such a broadcast could be potentially risky.

In the unlikely event that an extraterrestrial civilization receives this message, their response will likely be more than just “a friendly hello”.

Sandberg told Britain’s Telegraph in an April 17 article that the search for extraterrestrial life is being viewed as somewhat of a joke. “Many people are not serious about this. It’s sad because it’s important.”

Another FHI scientist – Toby Ord – suggested that there should be a public discussion before sending the signal to the aliens. Even listening to the messages they send to us (if any) is really dangerous, because it can be used to entice Earthlings. “These hazards, while unlikely to occur, are still poorly understood and are not taken seriously,” Ord said.

In the past, weaker signals have been sent into space using older technologies, such as the Arecibo message sent in 1974. Russian scientists have also carried out a series of programs. such broadcasts, known as Cosmic Calls, in 1999 and 2003.

Scientists from the BITG team speculate that an alien being advanced enough to be able to communicate across space would “most likely understand the importance of peace and cooperation”. But Canadian futurist George Dvorsky rejects this argument, saying he can think of “many scenarios” in which evil-minded extraterrestrials continue to exist.
