UN efforts to end conflict in Ukraine

It is expected that in Moscow, Russia, Mr. Guterres will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on April 26.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations will then travel to Ukraine and have a meeting with the country’s President and Foreign Minister on April 28.

During both visits, Mr. Guterres plans to discuss immediate steps that can be taken to end Russia-Ukraine war and evacuate the Ukrainian people to safety.

The conflict in Ukraine has been going on for more than 2 months. Fighting is still raging fiercely, especially in the important port city of Mariupol.

According to United Nations figures, more than 5 million people have been displaced from Ukraine since the outbreak of hostilities.

Meanwhile, on April 25, the Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the delegations Russia and Ukraine is still active and the negotiation process between the two sides is still ongoing. Ms. Zakharova emphasized that delegations of the two countries have been established, conducting many negotiations in both face-to-face and online forms. Currently, both these delegations are still active and the negotiation process between the two sides has not ended.

When asked about the possibility of direct negotiations, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said that there is no information about “other forms” of negotiations.

Since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, the two sides have conducted many negotiations to end the conflict.

On March 29, Russian and Ukrainian officials held face-to-face negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey. Previously, the two sides also conducted three rounds of face-to-face negotiations in Belarus and one round of online negotiations.
