In 2004, the death of a woman named Gayle Laverne Grinds (39 years old) from Martin County, USA became a topic of media frenzy.
Weighing 218kg, Gayle was bedridden for 6 years, she couldn’t even get up to go to the toilet. Even more surprising was that her skin was also glued to the sofa she usually lay on.
Miss Gayle’s skin was glued to the sofa after six years of lying motionless on it.
Gayle’s brother and his girlfriend called emergency services after sensing she was having trouble breathing. To be able to rescue Gayle, rescuers had to build a large wooden stretcher to lift the patient and the chair at the same time.
Next, they continued to break down the glass door behind the house to create an opening large enough to get Gayle out. Finally, they used a trailer, connected to a new pickup truck that could transport her to the hospital.
However, despite being rescued by rescuers within 6 hours, Gayle still did not survive after a long time fighting with the agony of lying motionless. Autopsy results showed that the 1.45m tall woman died due to excessive obesity.
Herman Thomas (54), who lives with Gayle in the apartment, said: “I tried to take care of her as best I could. I tried to help her up, but it didn’t do any good. I wished I could pull her off the sofa, but she didn’t. let me do it”.
In 2017, an elderly woman named Barbara Foster (75 years old, in the US state of Ohio) was also found in a critical condition, her body stuck in the sofa in the living room among her own waste.
Barbara’s skin, weighing 250 kg, was stuck to the chair and her body was very weak at the time. “Barbara was so weak that her bones broke when rescuers lifted her up.”, as reported by the local police office. After that, the patient was treated at the University of Toledo Medical Center and fortunately survived.
