The US launched new sanctions on Russia’s media, defense and services sectors

The White House said it would sanction three major Russian television stations, including NTV, Russia-1 and Channel One Russia, which the United States says has been at the forefront of spreading misinformation about illegal activities. Among the Russian individuals on the US sanctions list are two executives of Gazprombank (the bank that supports the business transactions of Russian energy giant Gazprom), eight executives of Sberbank.

The US State Department has also announced a series of visa bans and restrictions for 2,500 Russian military officers and Russian-backed forces in Ukraine. The US State Department sanctioned eight companies related to the Russian maritime sector, including a shipping company of the Russian Defense Ministry, adding 69 ships to the US Treasury Department’s sanctions list.

According to CNN, the above measures are mainly to close the loopholes of existing sanctions and increase the “tightening of the pincer” on the Russian economy.

Previously, the Biden administration had considered US service providers as a potential tool that Russia could use to evade sanctions already imposed.
