This is an expensive silk and is produced on a very small scale in some Asian countries such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia; They are taken from the silk thread pulled at the lotus stem. This process requires meticulousness and is extremely complicated.

It takes two months to make a scarf alone, so the price of products made from this silk is often 10 times more expensive than ordinary silk.

Lotus silk is very different from silk because they are very thin, soft, not hard like silk (because silk has been passed through a glue gland inside the silkworm). In the past, people used lotus silk to make robes as a gift for Buddha statues or Buddhist monks.

Lotus silk originates from Myanmar, specifically this type of silk was invented by an Intha woman named Sa Oo who lived in Kyaingkhan village in the early 1900s. She used pink lotus.

She used this silk to sew robes for monks in the locality, in Vietnam, Mrs. Phan Thi Thuan, a weaver in Hanoi, was the pioneer to bring the custom of lotus silk weaving to the area. Vietnam.

At present, lotus silk has been used more widely and has become a high-class silk, used to weave many different types of clothing. To be able to create this special lotus silk, the artisan must do it manually from the beginning to the end of the process.

First, the lotus stems are harvested by hand and people must quickly remove the silk within 24 hours while the plant is still wet because if left to dry, the lotus silk will be broken. People will harvest from April to October every year.

If the silk thread is very tough and can be woven by machine, the lotus silk is very fragile, so it has to be woven by hand, that’s why a scarf only 25 cm long costs $200 (more than 4.5 million USD). copper).
