Flooded with rain, HCMC doctors caught crabs in the emergency department

Heavy rain lasted for many hours in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday afternoon, leading to a scene of crying and laughing at the General Hospital of Hoc Mon area.

Doctor Dang Quoc Quan, Director of Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital (HCMC) said that the rain on the evening of June 2 had flooded the hospital. This is not a strange situation because almost every year, in the rainy season, the General Hospital in Hoc Mon area is flooded.

Specifically, on the evening of June 2, heavy rain appeared in many places in Ho Chi Minh City. The rain lasted for several hours, causing water to overflow into many hospital wards. By the evening of the same day, the rain had not stopped, the water was deep up to the legs and flooded the Emergency Department. Doctors must wear boots to examine and care for patients.

Even the emergency doctor on duty caught crabs in the water. Our medical staff are very familiar with the flood scene here, so there is preparation, medical examination and treatment takes place normally.

On the morning of June 3, when the water receded, the doctors and nurses worked together to clean up so that people who came for medical examination and treatment would not be affected, ensuring hygiene. In order to deal with the situation of “rescheduled” flooding, the hospital can only temporarily raise the foundation and “get tired” of waiting.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has started the project of General Hospital in Hoc Mon area, a new facility, with a scale of 14 floors at Ba Trieu street, Hoc Mon town. The project has a total investment of nearly 1,900 billion VND, has now carried out the topping out. It is expected to come into operation in 2023, replacing the old facility.

The flood scene at the hospital did not occur at the General Hospital of Hoc Mon area. In 2016, during the record heavy rain in Ho Chi Minh City, medical staff at Trung Vuong Hospital also caught eels and fish.
