Breast augmentation death: Surgeons, anesthesiologists all have practice certificates

Regarding the case that Ms. NTNT (33 years old, Dong Thap) died while having breast augmentation at 1A Hospital, the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City said it would consider a meeting of the Technical and Professional Council to have a conclusion on this incident. .

Hospital 1A belongs to the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, therefore, the Hospital has reported the case to this Ministry and the Medical Examination and Treatment Administration, Ministry of Health.

Accordingly, Ms. NTNN (from Dong Thap, living in District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) suffered from bilateral breast hypoplasia and required breast reconstruction surgery. The patient was introduced by Dr. Nguyen Van Thiet to 1A Hospital for surgery.

Here, patients are examined and tested preoperatively according to hospital procedures. Ms. N. had breast reconstruction surgery with gel bags, endotracheal anesthesia.

The person directly performing the surgery is the CKI doctor. Nguyen Van Thiet. Dr. Thiet has a practicing certificate issued by the Ministry of Health to supplement the scope of medical examination and treatment specializing in plastic surgery. The anesthesiologist is a CKI doctor. Vo Van Tuan, has a practicing certificate in medical examination and treatment specializing in anesthesiology and resuscitation.

These two doctors have employment contracts with Hospital 1A.

According to the report, Ms. N. suffered from respiratory arrest during the surgery, and was actively resuscitated according to the procedure. The case is currently awaiting the results of the forensic examination of the investigating police agency.

According to her family, Ms. N. was found dead.

Before that, on March 18, Ms. NTNN’s family discovered that Ms. N. had died when she went to 1A Hospital for breast augmentation. The family said that they had to search each room by themselves to find out where Ms. N. was lying. In the past 2 days, apart from the surgeon present to apologize, the hospital leadership has not met the family directly to work or explain.

The reporter contacted the leadership of 1A Hospital, however, the hospital representative said that the statement should be left to the Tan Binh district investigation agency – as the “middleman”. The hospital has provided all necessary documents and records to the police agency.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City said that it had written a request to Hospital 1A to clearly report the content of the above medical incident to have a basis to report to the City People’s Committee and the Ministry of Health. Upon receipt of the report, the Department of Health will provide further information on the Hospital’s approved technical list and consider meeting the Department-level Professional and Technical Council.

Up to now, there are still many details that need to be clarified in the above case such as: Why not notify her family when Ms. N. has an accident? Why not bring family members to the patient’s room but let them go to each room to find them? Ms. N. was in poor health before surgery, was the initial examination safe or not? Whether or not the hospital requires the family to pay the full hospital fees even though Ms. N. has passed away for unknown reasons?
