Oman currently have eight points from eight matches in Group B of the third stage of 2022 World Cup qualifiers, seven points behind third-placed Australia. With two games to go, Ivankovic’s men no longer hope to break into the top 3 to find a chance to play in the continental play-offs.

It is a rather regrettable result for the Middle East representatives, especially when looking at a promising start in the group – a 1-0 win in Japan in the opening leg on 2 September 2021. But the current position and a 0-1 loss to Saudi Arabia and a draw 2 -2 with Australia in the last two legs shows certain progress from Oman under leaders Croatia.

The goal of coach Ivankovic and his students now is to maintain fourth position until the end of the qualifying round. And to achieve that goal, Oman will need to earn points in the last two rounds, including Vietnam’s away game tomorrow, March 24 and the game against China at home five days later.

LIFE first leg at home Muscat on 12 October 2021, Oman conceded first to Vietnam from Nguyen Tien Linh’s close-range ball in the 39th minute. But Oman equalized just before the end of the first half, and then scored two more goals in the second half to win back 3-1.

To prepare for tomorrow’s Vietnam match, Ivankovic’s teachers and students flew to Hanoi on the evening of March 21 and went to the training ground for the first time on March 22. Oman is currently ranked 79th in the FIFA football rankings table, nine places higher than Vietnam – 98th.

In the last match, Vietnam grabbed their first win, as they beat China 3-1 at home in My Dinh. But with three points at the moment, coach Park Hang-seo’s men are still bottom of Group B, two points behind China, who are next.
