The Can Tho – Ca Mau railway line has not been invested

The Ministry of Transportation is preparing a pre-feasibility report for the Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho railway project for the period 2026-2030, the Can Tho – Ca Mau section has not been studied.

The Ministry of Transportation has just responded to a petition by Can Tho voters about investing in the construction of a railway line from Ho Chi Minh City to Ca Mau to serve the needs of freight and passenger transportation between regions in the country.

According to the ministry, the results of planning research show that rail investment from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho is more urgent than from Can Tho to Ca Mau. The reason is that the demand for people travel and freight transport between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho is higher.

Meanwhile, the Can Tho – Ca Mau route highway system has been and is being invested. In particular, the Quan Lo – Phung Hiep National Highway and several sections of the 4-lane National Highway 1A have been renovated and upgraded. The Ministry of Transportation will invest in a 4-lane toll road from Can Tho to Soc Trang and Can Tho to Ca Mau in the 2021-2025 medium-term public investment plan.

On the other hand, due to its specificity, rail line investment requires large resources, complicated technical factors, and long preparation time. The current budget only guarantees investment in the rail line from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho. Therefore, the transportation sector has not invested in building a line from Can Tho to Ca Mau.

The Ministry of Transportation said it would direct relevant units to review and update the rail network plan in the future, estimating the feasibility and efficiency of rail investment from Can Tho to the Mekong.Ca Mau Delta in the period after 2030.

The plan is that the Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho railway line has a double track scale measuring 1,435 mm, passing through 5 provinces: Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Can Tho. The route is 135 km long, reducing more than 5 km and reducing one station compared to the previous plan. This reduction is due to the customized project running along the right-hand corridor of the Ho Chi Minh City – Trung Luong – My Thuan – Can Tho highway.

The estimated total investment of the project is about 10 billion USD. If completed, investors will take 25 years to repay, then transfer to the Ministry of Transportation.
