9 foods that should not be stored together

Some foods can work well together when eaten, but they can’t really coexist when stored.
There are actually foods you should never store near each other because of ethylene. Ethylene is a gaseous hormone that is released from specific fruits and vegetables when they are ripening. That’s why it’s essential to store ethylene-producing foods away from ethylene-sensitive foods.
Apples and carrots
Apples produce a lot of ethylene, which is why you have to be careful when storing them with other foods. Especially don’t put apples next to carrots. Otherwise, the carrots will taste bitter after only 2 weeks.

Cucumber and Tomato
Cucumbers are very sensitive to ethylene. It is better not to store them with tomatoes, although they make a perfect pair in salads. Cucumbers will start to turn yellow earlier than usual. You’re better off storing them in a different refrigerator than the tomatoes.

Onions and potatoes
Onions absorb moisture quickly but remain dry, potatoes give off too much moisture, so they cannot coexist side by side. Over time, the potato grows roots from the eye and the onion produces green shoots.

Banana and avocado
If your avocado is overripe, keep it away from the banana. However, if you want it to ripen faster, you can safely put an unripe avocado in a paper bag and store it next to the banana.

Peach and banana
Ripe peaches should be kept away from bananas because all the ethylene released by the bananas will cause the peaches to ripen faster than normal. The more ripe the banana, the more gas is released.

Eggplant
Melon can make eggplant spoil faster. So make sure you don’t store them in the cupboard with melons. However, if you want to store eggplants in the fridge, you’re better off keeping them away from any fruit.

Grapes and mango
Grapes are very “fragile” when stored. They do not tolerate any other nearby fruits or vegetables. Mangoes give off too much ethylene gas and ripening and rotting happen faster. Besides, strong-smelling vegetables are just terrible companions for grapes because grapes readily absorb odors.

Blueberries and Strawberries
Blueberries are creepers (which emit ethylene), and strawberries are not in that group. If you store them together, the strawberries may overripe and spoil sooner than usual. You can store unripe strawberries with blueberries together, however, if both are overripe, eat them within a few days.
Orange and Cabbage
Oranges release a lot of ethylene, so if you store them together, the cabbage will spoil quickly.
You’re better off storing the cabbage in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, while the oranges can be stored in a plastic container.
