The US has successfully implanted a 3D printed human ear for the first time

This pioneering step offers a ray of hope for people with a rare birth defect of small ears.

The procedure is done by scanning a 3D image of a patient’s normally developing ear, taking cartilage cells from their ear, and then culturing it to obtain just the right amount.

These cells are mixed with a collagen-based bioink, which is shaped into the outer ear with the help of a shell. 3D printing biodegradation.

The implanted ear will grow over time with the same shape and function as normal ears.
