EU will end dependence on Russian energy from 2027

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, EU spokesman for Energy Tim McPhie said the bloc would “completely end Russia’s dependence on fossil energy by 2027”.

Mr McPhie also said that the EU had estimated it could reduce its dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds this year and detailed plans would be published by the end of May.

Mr McPhie’s comments come after US President Joe Biden, during a visit to Brussels last week, pledged to supply the EU with 15 billion cubic meters of NLG this year. The EU currently imports 40% of its gas needs from Russia.

Earlier, on March 9, the European Commission (EC) announced a plan to cut the bloc’s dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds this year and completely end this dependence by 2030. Before the European Commission announced this plan, the German Chancellor and the Dutch Prime Minister also said that Europe could not stop gas dependence on Russia in the short term, so the European countries could soon Realizing the above plan is still a problem waiting to be solved.
